August J. Riese, 78, Groton R.
D. 2, died this morning at the
Cortland County Hospital following
a brief illness. Formerly of
Wisconsin, he had resided here
over 41 years. Born Feb. 10, 1877,
in Germany, Mr. Riese was the
son of Ernest and Wilhelmina
Kreuger. He was a member and
deacon of Groton City Congrega-
tional Church, and a member of
the Tompkins County Farm Bu-
reau, The Modern woodsmen of
America and the Dairyman's
League. His wife, Adie Hawkins
Riese, died six years ago.
Mr. Riese is survived by five
sons, Ernest, Groton, Vernon,
Marathon, Morris, Cortland, Lawrence,
Cortland, Stanley, Groton;
four daughters, Mrs, Gladys
Breeds, Cortland, Mrs. Laurene
Hilsinger, Cortland, Mrs. Lucille
Bana, DeRuyter, Mrs. Wilhelmina
Warner, Groton.
He is also survived by two sisters,
Mrs. Sarah McDonald, Chicago,
Mrs. Dora Hammill, Wisconsin;
three brothers, Herman
and Paul, Wisconsin, Fred, Calif-
ornia, and 28 grandchildren, 18
great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday afternoon at the
Groton City Congregational Church.
The Rev. D. C. Flatt, Cincinnatus,
will officiate. Interment will be in
McLean Cemetery.
Friends may call at the home of
Robert J. Booth, 110 Elm St., Groton,
from 7 to 9, Tuesday.
