He attended Little Rock Public Schools and was a graduate of Parkview High School, Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated cum laude of his class from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he majored in sociology and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also studied for his Master's degree at the University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington, Texas.
He was a counselor for many years at a boy's ranch for troubled young men in Linden, Tennessee. He also worked as a counselor at Job Corp in Little Rock, Arkansas. In his spare time, he mentored many young men throughout the years.
Mahlon was baptized into Christ at an early age at Cross Street Christian Church, Little Rock, Arkansas.
He leaves to cherish his memory a sister, Dazzle (Kim) Burns of Fort Smith, Arkansas; two brothers, Kenneth Sears of Austin, Texas and Willie Coakley III of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; an uncle, Kenneth (Pat) Sears of Little Rock, Arkansas; seven nephews, Khayyam Burns of Overland Park, Kansas, Kodi Burns of Auburn, Alabama, Kenrick Burns of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Michael Sears of Little Rock, Arkansas, Mart Sears of Little Rock, Arkansas, Keith Sears of Austin, Texas, Kevin Sears of Austin, Texas and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Cross Street Christian Church, 1223 Cross Street, Little Rock, Arkansas. Visitation 6-7 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014 at the funeral home, 8821 Colonel Glenn, Little Rock, Arkansas. Interment Arkansas Memorial Gardens in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
