Roy enlisted in the US Navy on December 21, 1942 at the age of 41. He was assigned to the SEABEES as a machinist and served in the South Pacific campaign. Along with his comrades, eh endured air raids, jungle rot, and many strange orders. At his side through it all as Brownie, a dog he had rescued. Brownie became the mascot of the 75th Naval Battalion and returned with Roy to Bucyrus in 1945.
