Griffith Owen Daviese, 90, one of Bucyrus' grand old men, died in City hospital at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, three weeks after he became ill. He was admitted to the hospital Feb. 10. Complications caused his death.
Born Dec. 11, 1849, in Morrow county, he was well and active when he celebrated his 90th Birthday at his home 227 East Charles street, where he and his granddaughter, Mrs. Stasia Reese Gearing resided. He was the son of Beneville and Margaret Owen Daviese. On Dec. 31, 1872, he was united in marriage to Phebia Ann Starner of Bucyrus and settled permanently in Bucyrus 35 years ago.
Since that time he had been associated with the New York Central Railroad company in the car repair department, and with the American Clay Machinery company as manager of the dynamo and generator department.
Fifteen years ago he retired after 70 years of service. He was reared on a farm and worked first in a lumber mill owned by his his father. He worked at this trade in Galion, Lexinton, Canton and Indiana before coming to Bucyrus.
He was a familiar figure on the streets of the city, of late years with his faithful dog, "Rudy". Although advanced in years, he kept pace with current happenings through reading the newspapers and magazines.
He held the distinction of being the second oldest member of the Masonic lodge in Bucyrus, from a point of membership.
His wife died on Jan. 27, 1929. Also preceding him in death were two children and one sister.
He was a lifelong Baptist.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Henderson & Lutz Funeral home. Rev. H. G. Twining of the Baptist Church will officate and burial will be made in Oakwood.
Friends may call Thursday from 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
