Althea M. Stangel, age 94, a Sturgeon Bay resident, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay.

Althea was born March 6, 1920 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Louis and Polly (Michalek) Aumann. She graduated with the class of 1938 from Lincoln High School. After graduation she attended Holy Family School of Nursing for three years and graduated in 1941. On October 7, 1941 she married Gary Stangel at St. Luke Catholic Church in Two Rivers. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2013. Althea and Gary were former owners of the Stangel Super Valu Grocery Stores in Two Rivers, Manitowoc, Sturgeon Bay and Kewaunee. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Parish of Sturgeon Bay and a member of St. Ann's Society. Althea enjoyed playing the piano and organ, crocheting, knitting, traveling and reading.

Althea is survived by her six children: Donald (Sharon) Stangel, Sheboygan; Claude (Sandra) Stangel, Kewaunee; Barry (Sheri) Stangel, Milwaukee; Luanne (Paul) Kozlowski, Sturgeon Bay; Alan (Sue) Stangel, Alaska; Steven (Suzan) Stangel, Riley's Bay; 12 grandchildren: Gina (Luke) Kelly; Jodi (Dan) Petrie; Jon (Nichole) Stangel; Jeremy (Jennie) Stangel; Jacob Stangel; Jeff (Michelle) Stangel; Kristen (Lou) Richard; Jim Schmidt; John (Adrienne) Schmidt; Kevin (Katie) Kozlowski; Michael Kozlowski; Travis Stangel and his fiancé: April Buhr; 20 great grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Evelyn Stangel, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents: Louis and Polly Aumann; her husband: Gary Stangel; one infant daughter: LouAnn Stangel; and one brother: Edwin Aumann.

Private family services were held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Rev. Carl Schmitt officiated and burial of her cremated remains will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
