Colonel Thomas Matthew Archer, U.S. Air Force retired, died at Travis Air Force Base hospital, Dec 16, 2006, after a brief illness.
A Mass and burial was on Dec 22, 2006, at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos CA.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Hazel Shuler Archer; son and daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
The honor guard of Travis Air Force Base paid tribute at his burial with a 21-gun salute in recognition of service to his country during World War II followed by 30 years in the U.S. Air Force.
He was born in Muscatine, Iowa, and grew up in Fairbury, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and was a member of the ROTC. In November 1941, he was stationed at Brooks Air Field in San Antonio and later at Big Spring, Texas, Bombardier School. In August 1945 he shipped out to the Philippines from Fort Mason.
He returned to Nebraska and then moved to San Francisco in 1946. He became an insurance broker and eventually opened his own office in the Bay Area until 1991. Col Archer and his wife settled in Palo Alto in 1950 to raise their family and lived there until 1998 when they retired to Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield CA.
He was a member of the Sierra Club, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, and Sons In Retirement, and a founding member of the recently dedicated U.S. Air Force Memorial in Washington DC. He loved playing golf, traveling in the US and abroad, taking daily walks, and enjoyed reading anything about current affairs, business or history. Socializing with neighbors, friends, and family was a favorite pastime.
