The son of Patrick Joseph O'Donnell and Elizabeth Mayes, Thomas was born and raised on a farm in Jersey County, Illinois.

Thomas was married to Dorothea Alice "Dorothy" Godar. They were the parents of 2 children. They lived on their farm until the fall of 1934, when Thomas was appointed postmaster of Grafton, Illinois. They moved into rooms in town at that time.

On the evening of 27 May 1935, Thomas worked at the Post Office until 6 p.m. On his way home, he stopped to visit and aunt, Margaret O'Donnell.

When he arrived home, Thomas collapsed on his doorstep. His wife, Dorothy sought the aid of a neighbor, Dorothy Brefeld. The pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Rev. Father Neveling, was also called to the scene. Thomas had been undergoing a series of treatments for what was called a blood condition.

At the time of his death, Thomas was 49 years, 8 months and 28 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Dorothy; 2 children, Thomas and Elizabeth, who were both scheduled to graduate from high school the following week; his father; and his siblings, Charles O'Donnell of Sheffield, Alabama, Mary Walsh of Jerseyville, Francis O'Donnell of Jersey County, Elizabeth O'Donnell and Isabel Leady, both of East St. Louis, Illinois, Margaret O'Donnell of Granite City, Illinois, Bernadette Bergman and Monica O'Donnell, both of Chicago, Illinois, and John O'Donnell of Grafton.

Thomas was preceded in death by his mother.

He was buried on 31 May 1935.
