ROBERT CRAMPTON, who follows farming and stock raising on section 10, Bowling township, is one of the worthy sons that the Emerald Isle has furnished to this country. He was born in Ireland, in 1845, and is a son of Robert and Anna (Rudd) Crampton, both of whom were natives of the same country. The grandparents spent their entire lives in that land.

The parents came to America in 1850, and after two years passed in New York, removed westward to Moline, Illinois. A year later they moved to Rock Island, where they lived four years. Mr. Crampton engaged in bookkeeping, both in Moline and Rock Island. He afterward purchased one hundred and twenty acres of land in Bowling township, and to this added a tract of eighty acres, which he improved, making his home thereon for some years. Afterward, however, he erected a residence in Milan, which continued to be the home of himself and wife until their deaths. He passed away in 1891, at the age of ninety-one years, and his wife died at the age of seventy-five.

Both were members of the Methodist church, and in his native land the father served as class leader. They had a family of eight children, six of whom are now living, namely: Richard; Henry, of Reno, Nevada; Emily, wife of Frank Tindall; Robert; Charles, of Farnam, Nebraska; and Anna, wife of James Betty.

When a child of five years Robert Crampton was brought to America by his parents. The voyage across the Atlantic was made in a sailing vessel, which after six weeks dropped anchor in the harbor of New York. He came with the family to the west, and for a time attended school in Rock Island, but removed to the farm when his father turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. He continued under the parental roof until he had attained his majority, and started out in business for himself by buying cattle. He afterward purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in Bowling township, and is now the owner of a valuable tract of two hundred and forty acres. Much of this is under a high state of cultivation and yields to the owner a rich return for his labor. He is also quite extensively engaged in stock raising, making a specialty of short horn cattle.

On the 7th of October, 1876, Mr. Crampton married Miss Lizzie Morris, and to them have been born five children, namely: John Morris, Alford William, Mary Truesdale, Faith Anna, and Carl Eckhardt. Mrs. Crampton is a native of Germany, born in Frankfort, November 17, 1850, and a daughter of Ferdinand and Barbara Eckhardt, both of whom are also natives of Germany. They came with their family to the new world in 1851 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they remained three years, and then came to Rock Island county, locating on a farm in Buffalo, Prairie township, where the parents yet reside. Of their family of nine children all are now grown and heads of families.

Mrs. Cramptun was the youngest of the nine. Soon after the family settled in Buffalo, Prairie township, she was taken by John and Abbie Morris and reared by them as their own
daughter, taking the name of Morris. Mr. Morris was a successful farmer, stock buyer and dealer and operated a farm near the Eckhardts.

Mr. and Mrs. Crampton are members of the Presbyterian church, in which Mr. Crampton is serving as elder. His political support is given the Republican party, but he has never sought or desired official honors, preferring to give his attention to his business interests, in which he is meeting with signal success. His life demonstrates the fact that labor and usefulness are the highway to honor.
