While in high school, she played flute in Cleveland's Shaw High School marching band which won state and national championships. The band had Tommy Dorsey as guest conductor on one occasion. Years later, one of her high school classmates said to her, "Jean, you are always curious about what's going on around the next corner- and then you go and look!" And so she did.
Jean was general assignment reporter/feature writer on four major metropolitan newspapers: the Los Angeles Herald, Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Los Angeles Mirror and Cleveland Press. She covered and/or wrote major breaking news stories for political campaigns, extended court cases, and general news. Under City Editor Agness Underwood, overseas assignments included covering the funeral of Pope John XXIII and the election of Pope Paul VI in Rome. Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon were among those she interviewed.
Jean did public relations for Rick Nelson, the Ozzie & Harriet Show, Kathy Crosby, Bing Crosby Productions, and Louis Armstrong. She later taught in Glendale CA Public Schools for 13 years, and became president of the Glendale Teachers Association, helping to negotiate labor contracts with the State. She left teaching to marry and move to Hawaii. All of her life, she was wonderfully caring and supportive of her extended family.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles E. Davis Jr., and second husband, Arthur P. Wildern. She is survived by her daughters, Jean M. Davis and Diane Hultquist; daughter-in-law Sue Davis; sons, Charles E. Davis III, Richard W. Davis, Kip Wildern, Tim Wildern; son-in-law Pi Ra; granddaughters Darci Davis, Cherille Davis, Faith Jones; and grandsons Charles E. Davis IV, Travis Davis, Barry Wildern. She graduated from Wellesley College with a BA in English.
