Abraham S. ‘Brownie' ‘Abe' Brown
May 5, 1925 - March 28, 2014
Abraham S. "Brownie" "Abe" Brown died Friday after a long illness.
He was born in Homestead, son of Sam and Mary (Corey) Brown. On June 11, 1950, he married Lula Mary Nassif in Altoona. Their love produced four children: Samuel J. Brown (Donna) of Annapolis, Deborah A. Brown in New York, Dr. Stephen D. Brown (Jennifer) of Annapolis and George E. Brown (Chris) of Annapolis. His 15 grandchildren: Sarah, Sammy, Anna, Lexi, Georgi, Helena, Laila, Catherine, Giselle, Stephen, Jenna, Mickey, Johnny, Annie and Georgia, were an endless source of his pride. Until his illness, he never missed an event or activity for his children or grandchildren. He video-taped every event so they could have their memories. In addition to his wife of 63 years, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his sisters-in-law: Vera Brown (Eddie) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Smith (Terry) of Montgomery Village, Md.; and brothers-in-law: George Nassif of Annapolis, Md., and Robert Nassif (Arlene) of Altoona; loving nieces and nephews and hundreds of relatives throughout the country.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Adieb "Eddie" Brown, of Jacksonville, Fla.
The most important things in his full life were his family, church, country and his love of music.
After graduating from the Homestead Public Schools in June 1943, he entered the United States Army Air Corps in July 1943, where he obtained training and education as a medical surgical technician. He was a proud American veteran. Upon his discharge in February 1946, he returned to Homestead where he purchased Donald Duck Cleaners. The following year he moved to Greensburg and entered St. Vincent College in Latrobe as a music major. After graduating with a B.A. in music in May 1951, he began his teaching career in Coalport where he shared his love of music with students from elementary school through high school. He continued to pursue his education at Penn State University, Duquesne University, Bowie State College, and received a Master's Degree in Education from Towson State College in 1969.
In 1962, he made a permanent move to Annapolis, where for three years he taught music at Southern High School. He was then promoted as an administrator to the Board of Education for Anne Arundel County.
Brownie's dedication and service to his church and religion is evidenced in his service as choir director of St. George's Syrian Orthodox Church in Altoona, 10 years as choir director at Mount Zion Methodist Church in Lothian, Md., and by being a member of the choirs at St. George's Syrian Orthodox Church in Washington, D.C., and SS. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Potomac, Md., where he was often a soloist. He was a founding member of SS. Peter and Paul where he remained a member, usher and member of the men's society until his death.
Music was his passion. Whenever a friend or relative married, Brownie was always there to sing and cheer them on. He instilled his love for music in his children and grandchildren who continue to carry on the family passion and traditions. Holidays were always a time for celebration, reflection, prayer and family. Every meal was started with a prayer and a comment on how great our country is and a request to protect our Armed Forces everywhere.
He was also a member of the St. Ignatius Society of the Antiochian Orthodox Church, BPO Elks in Annapolis, the National Education Association, the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County and a former member of South Anne Arundel County Lions club.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, Md., and from 2 to 5 and 6 until the 7:30 p.m. funeral service on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at SS. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 10620 River Road, Potomac, Md. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Annapolis, Md., at noon Wednesday, April 2. A mercy meal will be offered by the family at the church Tuesday.
