US Congressman. He moved to Wisconsin in 1839 and was active in banking, becoming wealthy as the founder of Marine Bank of Wisconsin. From 1864 until his death he was President of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, and its success made him Wisconsin’s wealthiest man. In 1870 he was the successful Democratic nominee for a seat in the US House of Representatives, and he served two terms, 1871 to 1875. Mitchell's Milwaukee mansion is now the site of the private Milwaukee Club. He helped popularize the sport of curling in the United States as the founder of the Milwaukee Curling Club and Patron of the National Curling Club. Milwaukee’s Mitchell Park and Mitchell Street are named for him, as is the city of Mitchell, South Dakota. Mitchell constructed Milwaukee's Mackie and Mitchell Buildings, which are on the National Register of Historic Places. A World War II Liberty Ship, "SS Alexander Mitchell" was named for him. Mitchell was married to the sister of Harrison Reed, who was Florida’s Governor during Reconstruction. Mitchell's son John L. Mitchell served in the US Senate, and his grandson “Billy" Mitchell was an Army General prominent in the early days of military aviation.
