U.S. Congressman. Educated at Pinkerton Academy New Hampshire, he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced to practice law in Amsterdam, New York. Moving to Columbus, Wisconsin, in 1856, he was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate in 1860, district attorney for Columbia County, in 1864 and collector of internal revenue for the second district of Wisconsin, in 1866. In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. After leaving Congress, he was U.S. Attorney for the eastern district of Wisconsin, (1876-85) and was U.S. Court Commissioner for Milwaukee County for many years.
