Death Takes Capt. Edward J. Anderson
Captain Edward J. Anderson, who retired in 1956 after 54 years in maritime services, died last night of a heart attack. He resided at 12200 Evanston Avenue.
Cremation will be under the direction of the Bleitz Mortuary. Memorial services are being arranged.
Captain Anderson was born in Norway. He began his career at the age of 13 on Norwegian freighters and signed on an American freighter in Australia when he was 16.
On Pacific Routes
Captain Anderson attended navigation school in San Francisco at 20 and was graduated as a Second Mate. He received his Master's papers two years later. He served on various freight and passenger lines out of San Francisco, including the American-Hawaiian Steamship Co.
Captain Anderson came here in 1930. He was in the Naval Reserve a number of years and at the beginning of the Second World War went on active duty. He was Executive Officer on a Navy transport which was bombed and sunk at Guadalcanal and was rescued from a raft by another vessel.
Transport Specialist
Captain Anderson was promoted to Captain in 1943 and was skipper of the Rawlins, the Brant and the Bellabrix. He was discharged in 1947 and joined the Military Sea Transportation Service in 1950. He was a transportation specialist. He retired in 1956.
Captain Anderson was a member of the Queen City Lawn Bowling Club, the Highlands Episcopal Church, the Masters, Mates & Pilots' Association and the Puget Sound Pilots.
Surviving are his wife, Marietta Tadsie King Anderson; a daughter, Charlotte Anderson, Seattle; three brothers and three sisters.
