In January, 1896 Matt married 16 year old Maria Sophia Sunnarborg in Ironwood, MI. They Americanized their names to Matt K. Thompson and Sophie Thompson. Around 1906, they left Ironwood and moved to Marengo WI, where they purchased a plot of land and begin farming. Matt and Sophie had 15 children together. 12 survived into adulthood.
Matt was stricken with pneumonia and passed in 1934. He is survived a brother Alex, Pecan MS; his wife and 11 of his children. Julia Thompson Moe was the only child to predecease both her parents.
Matt's half-sister Nanni Kantola and niece Saimi Sofia Kantola Holappa Kallio are buried together.
