Born James Rice Algier.
Served in the Civil War in Co. G 117th. and Co. D 48th. New York Infantry from March to September 1865, as James Algiers.
His enlistment papers state he was born in Canada and was aged 18 years. It appears he was not even 15 years of age.
Married Cecelia O'Regan at Chicopee, Massachuseets 25 December 1876. as James R Alger.
Applied for an army invalid pension in 1880.
According to a list of headstones provided for deceased Union veterans, he died on 30 November 1882.
A headstone was shipped to Chicopee, Massachusetts for erection in 1883.
