Horace (better known as 'Bob') Hyde was pilot aboard Lancaster JA-967 'THE SAINT' 83 Squadron PATHFINDERS which was involved in a collision with another Lancaster (HK-537) which was attempting to turn back to base after major problems. Both aircraft crashed on the small island of Als,Denmark. JA-967 came down close to the village of Broballe and HK-537 near Mjels. All crew members were killed. The crash was witnessed by local Danes who annually remember the two crews involved at the crash site.
'Bob' Hyde was 32 years of age and had already cheated death some weeks before on 26th November 1943 when the Lancaster he was to pilot blew up whilst standing on Wyton air base. The Lancaster in question was JA-686.
By all accounts Horace Hyde was a very experienced pilot and his crew regarded him highly. He shares a collective grave with all of his crew. Horace Robert Hyde left a widow Doris Hyde. R.I.P 'Bob' WE WILL REMEMBER.
The two crews are remembered annually on 29th January at the crash site in Broballe, Denmark by the faithful Danes.
