John Mechem II was born 29 Aug 1772 at Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of John Mechem and Jane Stanley. He was married to Sarah Evans at East Bradford, Pennsylvania on 23 Jun 1794. In 1808 John moved to Belmont Co. Ohio, locating first at Colerain Twp., then at Barnesville, then at Malaga in Monroe Co, and then returned to Belmont County near Captina Creek in 1816. John had a mercantile business for most of his life and he was a Hicksite Quaker. In the 1850 Census for Sunsbury, Monroe County, Ohio, John Mechine is reported as a farmer, value of real estate $3000, born in Pennsylvania. John II and Sarah had 13 children: Mary, John, Ellen Danford, Jane Moore, Lewis J., Abner Edward, Nancy Danford, Rachel Danford, Jesse Evans, Edwin, Edmund, Lydia Balding and Naomi Gregg. John II died on 9 Aug 1856 at Washington Township, Belmont County, Ohio. He was reportedly buried in Beallsville Old Methodist Cemetery, Monroe Co., OH, but the tombstone there most likely belongs to his son John Mechem III. As he was a Quaker he might be buried in a Friends Cemetery or perhaps he was buried on the farm of his son Lewis J. Mechem with Lewis’ daughter Sina Anne (1831-1853). That gravesite is now part of the Belmont Ridge Christian Church Cemetery. For more information see “The Mechem Family History” by Raymond W. Mechem, Hampton, Iowa. 2nd Edition, 1988, pgs 5 & 6.
