Lewis Williams (1786-1842) - Find a Grave Memorial

US Congressman. He represented his native North Carolina's 13th District for 14 consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives, serving from 1815 until his death. Lewis was born in Surry County and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1808. His first elected office was as a member of the State House of Commons (1813 and 1814). As a career Congressman he owed his longevity to moderate views and an unerring sense of political trends, switching party affiliations when necessary. During his 27 years in the US House Lewis was an early Republican, a Crawford Republican, an Adams candidate, an Anti-Jacksonian, and finally a Whig. For six of his terms he was Chairman of the Committee on Claims and during the Twenty-Third Congress he chaired the Committee on Territories. He died after a brief illness in Washington DC, where a cenotaph stands in his memory at Congressional Cemetery. His brothers were US Congressman and Mississippi Territorial Governor Robert Williams and US Senator John Williams.
