U.S. Congressman. While engaged as a school teacher in Woodbury, Ohio, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced to practice law at London, Ohio. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives (1849, 58-59, 62-63). In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving until 1867. After his term, he was appointed by President Johnson as Minister to Portugal, but his nomination was not confirmed and served in the Ohio State Senate in (1869-71). After leaving the Ohio State Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
