Our mother, Nora Anne was born in Fisher, LA. to Harry John Arnold Sherlock (alias: Jean O'Drain) and his wife, Annie Ruth Foley. Mother had an older brother, Jean Foley O'Drain. The family had lived in various places in Arkansas, Texas, & Louisiana following the cutting of virgin timber at sawmills. Fisher was a sawmill village with a general store and a post office. By the 1930's the family moved to Dallas, TX where our grandfather worked for Buell Lumber Co. He died from a heart attack in 1942. Our granny, Ruth Foley O'Drain, and Momma went to work in factories like so many other women to support themselves and the war-machine of WWII.
Nora Anne O'Drain met and married Bill A. Ashworth, Sr. in Houston, TX in 1947. Our brother, Billy, Jr. was born 1948 in Houston. Daddy (Bill, Sr.) moved their little family to Jewett, TX where he farmed and sold vegetables. While living at the farm in Jewett, Mother became pregnant with her next two children and traveled to Dallas, TX to be with her mother while she gave birth to David Jack in 1949 and Weldon Jean in 1950.
Mother & Daddy moved to Longview, TX where their last child, Ernest Boyd, was born in 1953. The family later lived in Judson, Spring Hill, & East Mountain rural communities of Gregg & Upshur counties.
Nora Anne Ashworth was an educated woman with many skills that she used in various places of public employment. At the time of her death in 1990, she was employed by Marathon LeTourneau for 23 yrs and was head of the payroll department. Momma had numerous friends who loved her and spoke highly of her love of the Lord and her fellowman.
Momma loved to play the piano and she sang a very strong tenor. She taught all of us boys the love and appreciation for obtaining a good education. Like her father and brother, she was a poet and had many inspirational poems to her credit. Her love for the outdoors was a perfect match for Daddy. She loved the cool dark, shady areas of the deep forest and referred to them as "secret places," a term used by prophets of the Old Testament in the Holy Bible. Mother was a devout Christian and ministered as a disciple of Jesus Christ to all who would allow her the privilege of their association. Mother had a great love for her family. One of her granddaughters (Eva Marye Foley Ashworth Meadows) named her daughter Nora Anne Meadows to honor the memory of her grandmother. I know our mother, Nora Anne O'Drain Ashworth welcomed Daddy with open arms. She had preceded him "across the river" to Paradise by more than twenty years. May God grant them eternal happiness.
