WINDSOR, Vt. — Ervil Willis Bentley Jr. passed away at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in Windsor, Vt., on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, after a period of declining health. He was 88.

He was born in Cambridge, N.Y., on June 8, 1922, and graduated from Cambridge High School, where he was a distinguished member of the rifle team.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and lived in West Canaan, N.H., for many years after the war. He was employed by the Dartmouth College Thayer School of Engineering in Hanover, N.H., where he worked in the Radiophysics Lab as a research technician from 1951 to 1973.

He spent most of his retirement years as a resident of White River Junction, Vt. He was an avid gardener, electronics technician, and accomplished woodworker.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ervil Willis Sr. and mother, Harriet Elizabeth (Vanfleet).

He has two living brothers: Loren Edgar of Northville and Morris Vanfleet of Cambridge. He also leaves two sons, Alan Reed and David Lee; six grandchildren: Sheila Renee (Hahn); Gregory Michael; Christy Eileen (Whitaker); Laura Lynn (Webb); Holly Beth and Brian Matthew; and six great-grandchildren: Courtney (Hahn); Sydney; Alexis, Olivia (Webb) Reyna and Isaac (Whitaker).

No visitation or funeral service is scheduled but a memorial service with full military honors will be held at a later date.
