OBITUARY-
AUSTIN -- Services for Lyal E. Powell will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church here, with the Rev. Harold Usgaard officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, with Olaf B. Damm Post 1216 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of military rites.

Mr. Powell, 83, of 211 11th Ave. S.W., died Thursday (Sept. 22, 1994) at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

He was born Oct. 2, 1910, in Garner, Iowa, and he grew up in Cresco, Iowa, and moved to Austin with his family in 1928. He married Helen Fjelbroten on June 19, 1938, in Albert Lea. Mr. Powell worked for Hormel Foods Corp. from 1928 to 1974. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and Olaf B. Damm VFW Post 1216. He was an avid sportsman and especially enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Steve of Rochester; a daughter, Kathy Chepelnik of Duluth, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin and at the church one hour before services. Memorials are preferred to the family.
