US Congressman. He was born as James Brown Mosgrove in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, to John Mosgrove (1785-1832), and his wife Mary Gillespie Mosgrove (1790-1849), on June 14, 1821. He was educated locally in the common public schools and then engaged in the iron business. He also became interested in politics. He was an unsuccessful Candidate to represent the Forty-Sixth Congress on the Greenback ticket in 1878. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed United States Representative Harry White (1834-1920), on March 4, 1881. A Member of the Greenback Party, he then served Pennsylvania's 25th District (Forty-Seventh Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1881, to March 3, 1883. He declined to be a Candidate for renomination in 1882. He also declined to be a Candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Pennsylvania. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1883, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative John Denniston Patton (1829-1904), on March 4, 1883. After his time in the United States Congress, he engaged in banking and oil pursuits and was a business partner with James E. Brown, and the President of Kittanning Iron & Steel Company in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and President of the First National Bank in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, from 1882 until his death on November 27, 1900. He was also considered the wealthiest man in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, having also invested in real estate and other properties and at his death having his fortune being estimated at over a million dollars. He was married in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, on January 14, 1845, to Rebecca Jane Brown Mosgrove (1817-1899), with whom he had seven children including, Mary, Gilles, Robert, Phebe, Wilson, Anna. He passed away in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, on November 27, 1900 (which was also Thanksgiving Day), at the age of 78, and he was buried in Kittanning Cemetery in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, where several other famous personalities are also laid to rest. He was predeceased by his wife but was survived by two daughters. He left his vast estate to both of his daughters.
