Fifteen year old Emma was killed in the explosion of the munitions factory where she worked. An accidently ignited primer caused an explosion that destroyed the 70 foot long factory building. Officially 69 people were injured. 47 died. Only 3 were men. The others were mostly very young women. At least five were twelve year old girls. These girls were making explosive munitions because their fathers and brothers were at war. Their small, nimble hands were well suited for it. The Brown's Island Disaster that destroyed the Confederate States Laboratory was Richmond's worst during the Civil War.
