Son of Jared and Asena (Douglas) Chittenden. He graduated from Albany, New York Medical College in January 1846 and moved to Janesville Wisconsin in November 1846 where he established his practice. He married Charlotte Wellman (1822-1847) and second married Melissa Gilette (1822-1891).
