ATHENS — Susan K. Ipacs, 56, died of metastatic melanoma on Oct. 21, 2010, in her home in Athens. Born July 14, 1954, in Chillicothe, she was the daughter of Sarah and the late Roger Butterbaugh.

Sue graduated from Chilli-cothe High School in 1972. She was inducted into the National Honor Society, played flute in band and was a band Cavalette. She was a shy, intellectually bright and somewhat mischievous woman, whose closest friends included Vicki Newton and Debbie Caplinger.

Sue graduated with an associate degree in nursing from Hocking College in 1977, with a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Ohio University in 1984 and with a master of science degree from Wright State University in 1994. She completed each degree summa cum laude.

Sue became an instructor at Hocking College in 1985 and the associate dean of nursing in 1999. Her professional memberships included the Ohio Council of Associate Degree Nursing Education Administrators, the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Education Advisory Council of the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Sue is survived by her husband of 23 years, Joseph A. Ipacs; their two sons, Joseph and Christopher "Bo" of Athens; a daughter from a previous marriage, Jill (Ryan) Shumaker of Columbus, and her three children, Nolan, Ian and Sophia; three siblings, David (Linda) Butterbaugh of Circleville, Cathy (William) Hines of Chillicothe, and Dale (Trisha) Butterbaugh of Gotha, Fla.; her mother-in-law, Isabella Ipacs; and a brother-in-law, Lorant (Shelly) Ipacs of Pataskala. Sue was close to Candice Wade.

She was a member of Christ Community Wesleyan Church. Her life exemplified her faith and values. She enjoyed her two dogs, Baxter and Tank, as well as working on her flower garden and travelling.

The family is grateful for Appalachian Community Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice; her colleagues and friends at Hocking College; the friends and staff at Appalachian Behavioral Healthcare; and supportive individuals from Christ Community Wesleyan Church.

The family wishes not to receive flowers. A scholarship has been established to honor Sue's work and life as nurse, instructor, associate dean, mother, wife and friend. Donations may be made to the Susan K. Ipacs Nursing Legacy Scholar-ship Fund, P.O. Box 456, Nelsonville, OH 45764; or at www.appalachianohio.org.
