Herder's Death Held Accident

Verdict Returned by Coroner's Jury

John Allen, 56, sheepherder, came to his death of injuries suffered accidentally, it was determined Monday afternoon by a coroner's jury.

His skull fractured, the unconscious man was found shortly after 10 p. m. Saturday at the front of the staircase of the Reid hotel, 244 South Center street, where he was a guest.

Following a brief inquest conducted by County Attorney George A. Weedell and Coroner Lew M. Gay, at Weedell's office, the three jurors, Dave Williams, T. B. Leavitt, and E. L. Bohannan, pronounced their decision that Allen had "tripped on the stairs of the Reid hotel, causing a cerebral hemorrhage which resulted in death."

Fairfax C. Hughes, clerk, told of discovering Allen at the staircase foot and of calling an ambulance.; the man died 30 minutes later at Memorial hospital without recovering consciousness. He had registered the previous day. The deceased presumably had been in his room but a brief time and had started to go out.

Dr. Lawrence Barrett testified that when he examined Allen at the Memorial hospital the man's critical condition was apparent; that a fracture of the skull soon induced the fatal hemorrhage.

Coroner Gay introduced as an exhibit a shoe from one of the deceased's feet, showing how one heel had been torn loose, indicating what may have caused him to stumble. Gay also testified as to the dangerous character of the staircase, which he said was very steep; each of the stairs are flanged with metal, there is no railing or any other manner of protection, and there have been numerous instances of persons stumbling in the dangerous stairwell of the Reid, he said.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the Gay Mortuary. It is not known whether any relatives survive. Allen was widely known in the county, having worked on numerous ranches as a herder over a period of many years. Testimony was to the effect that he evidently was not in an intoxicated condition at the time of the accident but a few hours previously had been drinking.
