The Bettis family came to Tennessee from Virginia (by way of NC) James Jimmie Bettis fought under General Andrew Jackson at New Orleans in the War of 1812. He was a Tennessee rifleman. He went down to New Orleans on a flat boat from Tiptonvile, Tennessee. After the Battle of New Orleans and the defect of the British he walked back home. He survived by eating with the friendly Indians along the way.

James had gone to Memphis with his father William and brothers Drury and Tillman but returned to Wilson Co TN by 1850.
