Chaldean Patriarch of Babylon. A native of Tal'Afar, Karim Delly was born to a humble farming family of Christian origins. Entering St. Peter's Patriarchal Seminary in Mosul in 1940, he pursued his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Urbanian University and the Pontifical Lateran University, he was ordained priest there in December 1952. Named secretary of Patriarch Paul II Cheikho, at the early age of thirty five he was appointed auxiliary for the patriarchate of Babylon of the Chaldeans, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Palempoli di Asia on April 19, 1963, after being confirmed by Pope John XXIII. Granted the title of archbishop of Kashkar in 1967, Delly was elected Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans on December 3, 2003, taking the name of Emmanuel III. Pope Benedict XVI created him cardinal in the consistory of November 24, 2007, becoming thus the first Chaldean Patriarch to be elevated to the Sacred College. Retiring from office in 2012, he spent his last months with his relatives in the United States of America, passing away in San Diego, California. His tenure as patriarch in an Iraq undergoing military intervention which led to the fall of Saddam Hussein, was marked by several difficulties, including various attacks against Chaldean churches in Baghdad and Mosul.
