A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 20 at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Sammy Frye. Burial will follow with military honors at Cross Hill Cemetery.
A native of Troy, Wyatt was the last surviving child of Wyatt and Lula Helsabeck. He graduated from Troy High School and Pfeiffer Junior College. He served his country during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign in New Guinea and Luzon. After his service time he attended Florida State University and the University of North Carolina. He served as a librarian consultant at Mecklenberg County Library in Charlotte, retiring in 1973 to Port Charlotte, FL. He also wrote three novels, two plays and two books of poetry.
He is survived by: his nephews Donald J. Helsabeck of Morehead City, NC, Wyatt M. Helsabeck of Lexington, NC, Jack Lewis of Ramsuer, NC, James F. Russell of Carthage, NC; great-niece Carla Hughes of Conway, SC.
