Dufek, John "Honest John"

John "Honest John" Hugo Dufek, age 92, a lifelong Manitowoc resident, died early Thursday morning, April 10, 2014 at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Center - North Ridge, Manitowoc.

John was born April 9, 1922 in Manitowoc, son of the late Anton and Lillian (Krcma) Dufek. He graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1940. On July 9, 1960 he married the former Mary Drolson at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on December 27, 2012. John was a service station owner and operator at 19th and Washington Streets for 16 years. He was later a wholesale jobber for Sinclair and Shell Oil until his retirement in 1987. John was a Charter Member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church (Now St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo). He was the manager for the Manitowoc CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) fast pitch softball team. John was inducted in the Kenny's Softball Hall of Fame in 1995 and was installed in 2005 as a Superfan in the Roncalli High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Manitowoc Knights of Columbus Council 710.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Margie and Clarence Masshardt, Germantown; one grandson: Mike (Kate) Masshardt, Germantown; and one granddaughter: Megan Masshardt, Minneapolis; five nephews: Greg (Liz) Dufek, Bob (Gail) Dufek, Jim Dufek, Tim Irving & Christine Yu and Tom (Stephanie) Irving; one niece and her spouse: Anne Irving and Seamus Glynn. Other relatives and friends also survive. John was also preceded in death by one brother and sister-in-law: Anthony and Elaine Dufek; three sisters and one brother-in-law: Mary Ann and Jack Irving, Mildred Dufek and Margaret Dufek; and one niece: Patricia Irving.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo (1121 North 14th Street), Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo (1121 North 14th Street), Manitowoc, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
