Sylvia Elizabeth Hover was born in Nebraska in 1896, the firstborn child of Charles Lincoln Hover and Bertha Ayers. Her parents divorced several years later, and her mother remarried at the end of 1905. In the 1910 census, Sylvia and her brother Vivian lived with their mother and stepfather, Devalan Pearce.

In 1917, when she was 21 years old, Sylvia's father died. Two years later, she lost her brother Vivian, and in that same year, 23 year old Sylvia married John Borghoff, a dermatologist with a successful practice in Omaha.

She and her husband lived in Omaha where they brought up their three sons, John, James and Thomas. The family travelled, and in 1930 they were passengers on the SS De Grasse sailing from Plymouth, England to New York.

Sylvia Borgohoff died in 1992 having been preceded in death by her husband John (in 1957) and her son John (in 1974).
