Marie and Joe were married in Paris, TX on 29 Mar. 1940.Marie Billingslea

GREENVILLE — On Feb. 17, 2011, Marie Lisbeth Billingslea entered Heaven's gate at age 91, and was met by her beloved, Joe.

Marie was born on Aug. 28, 1919 in Chicota. She resided in an assisted living center in Plano near her daughter and family after living in Paris and Greenville for most of her life. Over the last years of life, she endured the gradual decline brought on by dementia and lost her life suddenly after suffering a stroke.

Marie was a student and graduate of TSCW (now TWU), and there earned her bachelor's degree. She went on to teach in the community of Midway. In 1939 she met the love of her life, Joe R. Billingslea. They married March 28, 1940, and settled in Paris, Texas, where both their children were born. Her husband served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, and Marie and the family followed him to several training bases. He was honorably discharged following a tragic plane crash, of which he was one of three survivors.

In 1952, the family moved to Greenville. During the 1960s, Marie taught English and French at Greenville Junior High. She was so loved by her students she continued to hear from them over her remaining years. After Joe's premature death in 1976, she worked as a Special Services officer at Citizen's Bank. In 1988, she returned to Paris to care for her aging mother until her death two years later. In 2006 at age of 87, she moved to Plano to be under the care of her daughter and other extended family.

Marie was known as "Marie B." to all her friends and associates, and Mimi to her grandchildren. She always had a smile and never met a stranger. She was a Pink Lady volunteer for many years at the Greenville and Paris hospitals, an avid bridge player and lover of crossword puzzles. She was an active and beloved member of her church Sunday school class in Paris.

Marie is survived by her daughter, son and wife; brother-in-law and sister-in-law; five grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. (The names of the living are to remain private.)

She was preceded in death by her parents, John G. Sr. and Ethel Patterson Brunson; a brother, John G. Brunson, Jr., and her husband.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff and caregivers of Emeritus at Collin Oaks for the tender loving care they gave her over the 4 1/2 years she lived there. For the last eight months, she cheerfully played the piano for the other residents of the Memory Care Unit, and she will be greatly missed by all.

Memorial services will be conducted by minister Van Lazaroff at First United Methodist Church of Paris at 2 p.m., March 5.

Visitation with the family will be at 1:30 and refreshments will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Alzheimer's Association.

Marie is buried in Meadowbrook Memorial Park in Paris, Lamar County, Texas, next to her spouse, Joe. The plot number is A-108-02. There is no marker there unless it has been covered by soil.
