SULPHUR – John Patrick Dixon, 90, passed away April 9, 2014 at local care center surrounded by his family.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, two sisters and the love of his life and wife of 67 years, Gloria VanDyke Dixon. Survivors include two daughters, Charlyne Dixon Hebert and husband Robert, and Cathy Dixon Marcantel and husband Joey; grandchildren Glenn Hebert, Stacy Hebert, Lori and Tim Miller, Jon' and Chris Jones, Scotty and Kim Marcantel, Dennis Marcantel, Paul and Haley Marcantel and Patrick Marcantel; great-grandchildren Jennifer Kilgore, Joseph Miller, Madolyne Miller, Maddyson Miller, Kennedy Hebert, Danielle Marcantel, Beth Marcantel, Alexis Jones, Olivia Marcantel, Victoria Jones, Jack Marcantel, Caden Marcantel, Emma Marcantel, Kate Marcantel and Addie Marcantel; one great-great grandchild Aidan Kilgore; and one son not by birth but by love Artis LeDoux and wife Mary Louise.
John, a World War II Veteran, served in the U.S. Marine Corp from January 1942 – January 1946. He served in Carlson's Raiders through the tour in the South Pacific. John always said, "Once a Marine, always a Marine." John worked for the local Cities Service Refinery from 1946 to 1961. In 1960 he and his partner, Robert Robbins, opened Tri City Auto Parts in Sulphur. He was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Sulphur since 1949. He served lovingly in the Maplewood-Hollywood Lions Club and the Sulphur Lions Club. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club Crippled Children's Camp in Leesville. He served as West Cal Port Director for 30 years until retiring. He served on the original board of Southland Field Airport in Sulphur. John was a Past Director of Arkansas Enterprise for the Blind. He enjoyed participating as a member of the Sulphur Masonic Lodge, Shriners and the Royal Order of the Jesters. For over 25 years he served as the Military Liaison for the city of Sulphur. He was an original board member of Bayou Oaks Country Club, past member of the Krewe of Cosmos. John served as the Jail Minister in Sulphur for over 35 years. He loved to travel, raise vegetables and work in and for the community and his church.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Friday with a Rosary at 6 p.m. in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. His funeral will be held at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 1401 Argin at Beglis Parkway, Sulphur on Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m. Son-in-law, Loren Williams will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South. Pallbearers will be Glenn Hebert, Tim Miller, Chris Jones, Scotty Marcantel, Dennis Marcantel, Paul Marcantel, Patrick Marcantel, Joseph Miller, Dean Peloquin, Tyrone Jones, Mike Consunado, John VanDyke, and Honorary Pallbearers Artis LeDoux and Aiden Kilgore.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of High Hope Care Center and a very special thanks to caregivers, Kelley Moore, April Elder, Hannah Hoelscher and Eva Thomas. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial fund at the First Christian Church, DOC, Sulphur or the Louisiana Crippled Children's Camp in Leesville sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Louisiana.
