Merle Melvin Rothwell was 93 years old when he passed away at home with his family by his bedside. He was born in Los Angeles, CA. His family soon moved to Fellows, CA. He attended Fellows Schools and graduated from Taft High School in 1938. He was in the C.C.C.'s a short time.

Merle came home and enlisted in the United States Army in 1940. He went into the active service in 1941. He was in the "First Wave" of soldiers on the "Utah Beach." He fought in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes before returning home in 1946. He was extremely proud to have served during World War II.

Merle worked as a truck driver in the oilfields. He worked for several trucking companies driving heavy trucks and equipment.

He is survived by his wife Janice (Cawelti) Rothwell of 73 years. Together they raised 5 children; Gary his eldest son and Richard his youngest son, pre deceased him; living is his daughter in-law Gail Rothwell in Roseville CA, Daughter Patricia Minton Bakersfield, CA, son James and wife Martha in York MN, youngest daughter Nancy Clark and husband Bruce of Red Bluff CA; also survived by his 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Merle was a strong, happy, man and always ready to joke and laugh with you. He was "number one" Poppy seller for the VFW Post 1468.

Merle will be interred at National Cemetary 30338 Bear Mountain Blvd.
