Another splendid citizen and sturdy landmark of this vicinity for the past forty-four years, B. B. Barrett, is no more. He joined the great majority, Tuesday, the cause of his death being a hard cold and weak heart. He was as well known, probably, as any man in this city, being of an open jolly nature and always looking on the bright side of things. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon in the Methodist church in this city, burial to be in Fairview cemetery by the side of his wife who died five years ago.

Benjamin B. Barrett was born at Winchester, Va., March 2, 1843, and died in Smith Center, Kans., March 6, 1923 at the age of 80 years and 4 days. The family moved to Ohio when he was a young man, and when the Civil war broke out he enlisted in the 11th Ohio cavalry and served three years and sixty-five days, most of that time being spent in the Rocky mountain states fighting Indians.

He located in Miami, county, Kansas, in 1869, and on August 17, 1871 he was married to Huldah Porter of Paola. To them were born eight children, two dying in infancy. The family came to Smith county in 1879 and homesteaded the quarter section four miles north of this city upon which they lived for many years. Mr. Barrett still owned the farm when he died. In 1916, he and his wife getting old and the children all gone from home, they moved to this city, and two years later Mrs. Barrett died. Afterwards, Mr. Barrett kept the home, but spent considerable of his time visiting his children at distant points.

The names and addresses of the six surviving: Urban of Lenora, Okla; Fred of Osawatomie; Frank of Olathe; Mrs. Effie Lawson, Big Fork, Mont; Guy of Smith Center, and Mrs. Nellie Clark of Big Fork, Mont.
