William Henry Norman, born August 13, 1862, was the fourth of eight children born to Moses Henry Norman and Lucy (Bosley) Norman. Born in Dodge County, Minnesota, William moved with his family to Granby Township, Minnesota, and then to Hamilton County, Iowa.

From 1879 to 1881 William attended Battle Creek College (7th Day Adventist) in Battle Creek, Michigan, taking the Teacher's Preparatory Course. Then, during the 1800's, William gradually moved west, living in Garnet, Kansas and Alamosa, Colorado. It is unknown if William ever actually worked as a school teacher. Sometime around 1890 William moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, where he went to work as a Saw Filer for the Arizona Lumber & Timber Company. He also became active in social and professional affairs, joining the International Order of Good Templars, the Methodist Church and the Independent Order of Foresters.

William was married to Ollie Randolph Axtell in Flagstaff on May 2, 1893. They stayed in Flagstaff until about 1905; then sold all their property and moved to Kirbyville, Texas, where William went to work for the Kirby Lumber Company.

Seven children were born to William and Ollie Norman:

Sarah Pearl Norman (1894 – 1913)
William Axtell Norman (1896 – 1971)
Ollie Jane Norman (1898 – 1978)
Grace May Norman (1900 – 1981)
Florence June Norman (1906 – 1989)
Dorothy Lois Norman (1911 – 1999)
Norman Axtell Norman (1913 – 2002)

On July 29, 1913, Sarah Pearl Norman died by drowning along with two of her friends in Cow Creek near Kirbyville. William and Ollie were devastated by her death. They eventually left Kirbyville, moving first to Beaumont, Texas, and then to Oakdale, Louisiana. By 1920 the family had returned to Flagstaff, Arizona. Sometime after returning to Flagstaff, William and Ollie separated; Ollie stayed in Flagstaff with the children and William moved to Madera, Mexico, where he went to work as a Saw Filer for an English Lumber Company.

Ollie (Axtell) Norman died on October 26, 1931 in Winona, Arizona, where she was employed as a school teacher. William returned for Ollie's funeral, then left Mexico for good in 1935, living the rest of his life with his eldest son in Camarillo, California. He died in Camarillo on December 20, 1943.
