Howard S. "Howdy" Wilcox, 82, Sarasota and Indianapolis, died Sept. 30, 2002, in Indianapolis. He retired in 1992 as president of Howard S. Wilcox Inc., a public-relations firm he founded in 1966. He graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington and was an Army veteran of World War II, a major general in the Army Reserves and commander of the Indiana National Guard's 38th Infantry Division.
He was founder of Indiana University's Little 500 bicycle race and served on numerous boards, including the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, United States Auto Club and Indiana University Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce (Dunford); sons Howard S. Jr., Don, David and Scott; stepsons J. Randolph Lowe and Patrick R. Lowe; stepdaughters Kristine Hackleman and Kathleen Guilliam; a sister, Marian W. Dalton; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services and entombment will be at in Indiana, where Flanner and Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary, Indianapolis, is in charge.
