Petition of Thos Edison, late of Nova Scotia, now of Woodhouse Twp., yeoman, desirous of settling in the vicinity of Talbot Road, and prepared to pay the fees to perform the settlement duties, and has never received a Grant of land from the Crown, and prays the Governor to order him a location of 200 acres on the conditions of settlement; Signed, Thomas Edison, 15 Dec 1811, Woodhouse.

1842 Upper Canada Census
Thomas Edison, farmer, age 45 years and upwards [[ age 65 ]], married, and proprietor of real property, inhabits one house on 200 acres, with 60 acres improved, at Malahide Twp, London District, Upper Canada (now Elgin Co., Ontario), residing with one married female, age 45 years and upwards [[ presumably his wife, Margaret Fitzgerald, age 68 ]], and one girl, age 6-13 , all three are natives of Canada of British origin, and one is a Baptist or Anabaptist.

In the name of God Amen I Thomas Edison of the Township of Malahide County of Middlesex District of London and Province of Upper Canada being of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God for the same calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say first of all I give and recommend [[ my ]] soul into the hand of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in descent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors And as touching such worldly estate where with it has pleased God to bless me in this life that is to say First I do request that all my honest Debts shall be paid out of my personal property I do also give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Margaret Edison the use of my property as long as she lives I do also give and bequeath unto my Daughter Susannah Edison her heirs and assigns forever all my property both stedfast and personal and I do hereby appoint Joseph Merritt and William Saxton [[ brother-in-law ]] Executors of this my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made in witness whereof I have here set my hand and seal this eighth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty

Estate of Thomas Edison, Surrogate Court, Elgin Co., Ontario, 1850, No. 55

To His Honor the Surrogate for the County of Middlesex of the Province of Canada

The petition of Enos Edison of the township of Bayham in the County of Middlesex and province of Canada Yeoman and Susannah Edison his wife. Respectfully sheweth

That Thomas Edison late of the township of Malahide in the County of Middlesex and province of Canada Yeoman departed this life on or about the twenty fourth day of July last past [[ 1850 ]] having left personal and real estate in the county aforesaid

That by last will and testament of the said Thomas Edison bearing date the Eighth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty And whereas Joseph Merritt and William Saxton were appointed executors of the said Thomas Edison He the said Thomas Edison did bequeath and give to the said Susannah Edison all his property both stedfast and personal to her, her heirs and assigns forever

That Margaret Edison wife of the said Thomas Edison died in or about the __nth day of August A.D. 1844.

That the said Susannah Edison is the only child and heir at law as well as sole legate of the said Thomas Edison deceased

That Joseph Merritt one of the executors aforesaid is now deceased having died in or about the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty two

That by deed of renunciation bearing date the eighth day of October A.D. 1850 and annexed hereunto William Saxton the sole surviving executor named in said will hath renounced all his right and title to the executorship and administrations of the goods and chattels of the said deceased unto the said Susannah Edison

That the executors aforesaid have not nor hath either of them ever acted under the said will assured the ____ or in any way interfered in the executorship or administration of the estate of the said deceased

Your petitioner would therefore pray that Letters of administration may be granted unto the said Susannah Edison, with the will annexed of all and singular the goods and chattels
rights and credits which were of the deceased at the time of his death or lawfully accruing after within the said County of Middlesex upon your petitioners giving the usual security faithfully that the said Susannah Edison shall and will faithfully administer the same according to Law

And your petitioners as in duty bound will Ever pray dated the twenty first day of October A.D. 1850
