James N. Wise, Professor Emeritus of English, passed away Monday, October 29, 2013, at Phelps County Regional Medical Center, at the age of 78, from complications due to esophageal cancer.

Jim was born in New Martinsville, WV on April 6, 1935. He was preceded in death by his father Harry E. Wise and mother Nell Wise.

Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years Hester Cheatham Wise, of Rolla, MO; by two sons, Garnett Wise, wife Julie, daughters, Bailey and Emma of Fayetteville, AR and by Dr. Ramsay Wise, wife, Joie Hendricks, and daughter, Keaton of Columbia, MO.

A 1953 graduate of Magnolia High School, Go Blue Eagles!, Jim earned his BA in Journalism and MA in English from West Virginia University. In 1959, while teaching at Georgetown College, he met and married Hester. He then earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida in 1964. After teaching at Western Kentucky University, he took a job at then named University of Missouri-Rolla where he taught literature and writing until his retirement after 33 years. He served as chair of the Department of Humanities and English at UMR (now MST) from 1981-1990.

A memorial service will be announced in the future. Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Public Library Children's Fund, or Lucy Wortham James Library in St. James, MO.

Dr. Wise received a B. S. in journalism (1957) and an M. A. in English (1958) from West Virginia University and a Ph. D. from the University of Florida in 1964. Before coming to Missouri S&T (formerly UMR) in 1967, he taught on the faculties of Georgetown College; the University of Florida; Western Kentucky University, where he received the outstanding English faculty award; and Kentucky Southern College.

At Missouri S&T, he taught British literature courses including sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature, Shakespeare and Milton, and topic courses on the Faust myth in modern literature and on utopian literature. He was chair of the Department of Humanities from 1981 to 1984 and the Department of English from 1984 to 1990.

Dr. Wise is the author of Sir Thomas Browne's "Religio Medici?" and Two Seventeenth-Century Critics (University of Missouri Press 1973). His articles and book reviews have appeared in the Arlington Quarterly, Costerus Essays in Philology and English Literature, Kentucky Folklore Record, Missouri Philological Journal, Missouri Folklore Journal and Utopian Studies. He served for over a decade on the University of Missouri Press faculty advisory committee. He was a reader for PAPA (Publication of the Arkansas Philological Association).

Dr. Wise was granted a Faculty Achievement Award to the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, in 1969 and was awarded three sabbatical leaves for research at the University of Florida (1974), the University of Michigan (1981) and the University of Missouri-Columbia (1991). He was awarded two Jefferson-Smurfit lectureships at University College-Dublin, taught twice in the Missouri London Program and was a guest lecturer for Concordia University (Montreal) at the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival.
