Joseph is the eldest son of Joseph Benjamin and his second wife, Sarah Clarke. He volunteered to serve in the militia under Lieutenant Colonel John Gorham Jr, when he was 21. This was during King William's War, also known as the Second Indian War. He was severely wounded in a battle at the town of Haverhill, Massachusetts. He received a pension four years later as a result of his injuries.
He moved with his family to Preston, New London, Connecticut in 1696. Joseph married Elizabeth Cooke at the First Congregational Church in Stonington, on 25 August 1698, in Preston City, New London, Connecticut. He was a blacksmith by trade.
His will is dated 26 May 1732, in Preston, naming the following children:
