Courtney A. Leonard, age 87, a Manitowoc resident, formerly of 1512 Cherry Road, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at St. Mary's Home at Felician Village.
Court was born on June 28, 1926 in the village of Brill in Barron County to the late Burritt and Olivia (Olson) Leonard. He graduated from Rice Lake High School with the class of 1944. Following graduation, Court enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II in the South Pacific as a paymaster second class on board the USS Indian Island AG77. On August 22, 1948, Court married Marcella "Marce" Billmeyer at Lake Street Methodist Church in Eau Claire. He attended UW Eau Claire before transferring to the University of California Berkeley where he obtained his BA degree in political science in 1950. Court then returned to Eau Claire where he obtained his BS degree in education in 1951. Although he was a life long learner, his formal education concluded with an M.S. in Mathematics from UW Madison in 1960.He began teaching at Lincoln High School in the fall of 1951 in the social studies department where he taught a course called Problems of Democracy. Court later transferred to the math department where he served as District Department Chair until his retirement in 1986.
Court enjoyed the recognition by and respect of his peers on both the local and state levels. He received numerous awards including Wisconsin state math teacher of the year from the math council, as well as recognition for years of service on Governor Thompson's advisory board for vocational education. Court was an active member of the community all the years he lived in Manitowoc, serving on the board of directors for the Capital Restoration in 1987, active in leadership at St. Paul's Methodist Church, a docent at Pine Crest, volunteering with the Boy Scouts and AFS. He was past president and secretary of Golden Kiwanis where he received many honors and recognitions. Court also served as Lieutenant Governor for Wisconsin / Upper Michigan District 10. He never lost his passion for political science and after his retirement from teaching, he immediately ran for the state assembly.
Court and Marce were supporters of Manitowoc Public Library, Wisconsin Maritime Museum, Capitol Civic Center, Rahr-West Art Museum, Manitowoc County Historical Village, Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, and the Manitowoc Lincoln Park Zoo.
Court developed an interest in all things natural with his family and loved camping, biking, cross country skiing, hiking and bowling. He was a devoted fan of both the Brewers and Packers.
Survivors include Court's wife of 65 plus years: Marce; three children: David Courtney (Susan) Leonard, Larsen; Christine Ann (Mike) O'Kelley, Mackay, ID; and John Christopher (Suzanne) Leonard, Chicago, IL; six grandchildren: Paul Courtney Leonard and Sarah Marie O'Brien; Brian Patrick O'Kelley and Sean Michael O'Kelley; Ian Courtney Leonard and Katherine Nicole Leonard; great grandson: Kaden Paul O'Brien. He is also survived by two sisters: Kay Wehner, Berkeley, CA; and Jean Lutterman, Washington, D.C.; two brothers: Dr. Craig (Jeanne) Leonard, Long Beach, CA; and Roger (Bev) Leonard, Eau Claire; Court is also survived by a special AFS Japanese son and his family: Tsutomu and Taiko Sugiyama and children Hajime Leonard Sugiyama and Shizuka Marcella Sugiyama; also many wonderful nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Lakeshore United Methodist Church, 411 Reed Avenue, Manitowoc. Rev. Nancy Twichill will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by VFW Otto Oast Post 659. The family will greet relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The visitation will continue at church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com
