Anne Armstrong Abbott, 86, of Ogunquit, a truly modern Renaissance woman, died peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at York Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Anne was born in Quincy, MA on April 2, 1928, the daughter of Clarence S. and Elizabeth Frances (Torrey) Armstrong. Anne graduated in 1946 from Woodward School for Girls, in Quincy. Upon graduation she attended Art School for two years.
In 1949, she married Michele J. Stivaletta. Together they raised five children. In those years Anne continued her passion in the Arts, she found everything in her world inspiring and created exceptional pieces that people cherish to this day.
In 1968 she returned to college earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from the Massachusetts College of Art. In one of her many final exams, rather than select an answer on the test from which to choose, she answered each question with a carefully scripted story. Her professor, Charles Abbott, was deeply impressed. It was then that he began to fall head over heels in love with her (and she got an "A" on the test)! They were married in 1970 and moved to Ogunquit, Maine. Anne and Charles spent 16 happy years together until his death in 1986. Anne continued fulfilling her career in art creation and teaching. She excelled in weaving, knitting, pottery, sewing and, her absolute passion for painting. Anne created masterpieces of art for her family and loved ones. Clothes were hand sewn, and multicolor, museum-quality creations were fashioned from dryer lint! Her creative mind was limitless. She was an avid learner, always striving to learn more about everything. As a member of the Boston Weaver's Guild, she used actual spinning wheels from the 18th century when fashioning designs. Anne never needed a pattern when knitting. She made the most amazing items from ideas she formed. A generous and caring person, she would donate her time and exquisite creations to schools and churches for learning and use in fundraising endeavors. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, and did charity work at the Ogunquit Baptist Church. She was a philosopher, poet, and avid reader. She maintained a vast collection of books in her house. Anne's ancestry could be traced all the way back to the Mayflower; however, those that knew her would understand when she teased that she was a "citizen of Mars!"
Anne was an Angel of Mercy. Putting her Christian faith to practice, she would seek out those in need, those in need of a place to stay, and offer her home to them. Whether a local person or, perhaps, a foreign visitor, she "adopted" them all and became their mother. As their "mother," she intuitively learned the personalities and desires of her wards. Many of these same persons stayed in touch with her after returning throughout their lives. Anne was providing this love and care up until her 85th year of life.
In addition to her husband, her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Stivaletta, predeceased her.
Survivors include three sons, Joseph Michele Stivaletta of Lexington, MA, Peter Francis Stivaletta and wife Colleen Forde of Wells, Marc Anthony Stivaletta of Ogunquit; two daughters, Michele Stivaletta Noble and husband Bion, Jr., of Wells, Anne Claire Bigbee and husband Allen of Wells; her brother, Clarence Armstrong and wife Barbara of Medfield, MA; four grandchildren, Caitlin, Megan, Mikey and Alaina, and two great grandchildren, Rylan and Kellan.
