US Congressman. Elected as a Democratic-Republican to represent New Jersey's 1st and 10th Districts in the US House of Representatives, he served from 1817 until his death in office. Linn was born near Johnsonburg, Warren County, New Jersey, and was raised in Sussex County. During the Revolutionary War he entered the Continental Army as a Private in the First Regiment of Captain Reuben Mannings's Company (formerly of the Sussex County Militia), and ended his service as a Sergeant. He was a member of the State General Assembly from 1801 to 1804, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1805 to 1821, and Sheriff of Sussex County in 1812. Linn died in Washington, DC near the end of his second term in Congress, and his funeral was held in the House Chamber. There is a cenotaph for him at Congressional Cemetery.
