Civil War Veteran Dies
Joshua Lamoreaux, aged 80, veteran of the Civil War, died yesterday morning at 7:30 o'clock at the home of his son, Albert Lamoreaux, 306 Shonk street, following an illness of general debility. Deceased had been in falling health for some time but had not taken to his bed until last Friday. He was born in Jackson Township, but had spent most of his life in this community, where he gained the acquaintance and friendship of a large following. At the age of seventeen he enlisted for service during the Civil War as a member of the Seventh Division of Pennsylvania Calvary. His youth prevented him from getting into active service during the early part of the war but later he took part in more than a dozen battles and skirmishes. He was honorably discharged on August 6, 1865.
The passing of Mr. Lamoreaux diminishes the ranks of local Civil War veterans to two, the survivors being Attorney John A. Opp and Frank Westover. As a resident of Plymouth the deceased endeared himself to a large following friends and his stories of war were a revelation to the younger generation of his neighborhood. He was a faithful attendant at the Christian Church.
Deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. Freas Yaple, Plymouth; Owen Lamoreaux, Plymouth; Harry Lamoreaux, Kingston; Albert Lamoreaux, Plymouth, and Mrs. John Harrison, Plymouth. Two brothers, Elijah Lamioreaux, Plymouth, and Peter Lamoreaux, Huntsville; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with services conducted at the home of his son, 306 Shonk street, by Rev. Ralph Lankler, of the Christian Church. Interment will be in Mt. Greenwood Cemetery.
