Obituary:
George Baker Gentry was born Aug. 21, 1918, in Carroll County, the son of John Wesley and Alice Baker Gentry. He died Oct. 24, 2005 at Shasta Health Care, Redding, Calif.
George attended the Concord and Shady Grove grade schools and graduated from Berryville High School in 1936. He taught one term of school in Madison County. His decision after teaching the one term was, "I'd rather starve than teach!"

When America entered World War 11, George volunteered for service in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed in England.

After the war he attended and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Civil Engineering. While a student at the University, he met and married Clara Cheney. George accepted a job with the California Department of Health and they moved to Fresno, Calif. Later they moved to Redding. George worked as a civil engineer for the California Department of Health until his retirement.

After Clara's death George married Marda.

George was preceded in death by Clara and Marda; his parents; a son, John; sisters, Catherine Gentry and Alice Lee; and brother-in-law, Arthur Lee.

Survivors include sons Kelly Gentry of Three Rivers, Calif. and Steven Gentry of San Jose, Calif.; daughter Karen Pantalone and her husband, Vince of Carmichael, Calif. He is also survived by four step-daughters Ann Smith, Maggie DeForest, Mary Lau and Marci Shelby; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Graveside services for George Gentry, 87, were conducted Oct. 26, 2005 by Rev. Brad Manley at Redding Memorial Park. Arrangements were handled by McDonald''s Redding Chapel.
