Jeff Burnette was murdered while taking a nap in the plantation's commissary. A new hire was said to have murdered him and taken all of the money in the register. The family and neighbors went on a manhunt, finding the suspected killed under the Drag Nasty Creek Bridge which at that time was on Old 39. They did not wait on law enforcement but instead hung the man from a tree near the Burnette and Castleberry Plantations. The tree was then named the hanging tree. Law officials tried to find out who took the law into their own hands but no one would talk.
