Son of the late Celeste and Alelia Turner Berty

Allen "Ike” Turner Berty, 91, formerly of Falls Creek Pa., went home to be with the Lord Friday October 2, 2009 at Wesbury U.M. Retirement Community in Meadville where he recently resided. He was born April 19,1918 in Falls Creek, Pa., a son of the late Celeste and Alelia Turner Berty. He graduated from Falls Creek High School in 1935. After school he worked for the Atlantic Refining Company, eventually becoming a station manager. He married Edna Gregg on April 19, 1941. Allen was inducted into the Army in 1944 and was later deployed in the European theater of operations with the 417 Infantry, 76th Division where he was wounded during combat operations in Germany. He later served in the 38th Engineers General Service Regiment. Through Allen's military service he received the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the WWII Victory Medal. Upon his discharge from the military in 1946 Allen returned to Falls Creek where he worked for Lippert and Love Construction Company. He became a foreman in the company and was a well-known bricklayer and stone mason in the Western Pennsylvania area. He became a partner in Lippert and Love in the early 1970's and operated the company until he retired in 1983. Allen was a member of the Falls Creek United Methodist Church where he served in many positions including Sunday School Superintendent, Trustees, Finance, and Administrative Board. In the late 1950's he supervised the building of an educational wing on the church. He was also a member of the Falls Creek American Legion, the Order of Odd Fellows, and the Rotary. He enjoyed hunting and gardening. Over a 10-year period Allen made 12 mission trips to Haiti on work teams building several churches, schools, dormitories and multi purpose buildings. He organized and led several of the teams. His wife, Edna, died on December 17, 1975. He married Betty Chitester Snyder on June 5, 1976. They moved to Erie in June 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ethel Faulkner and Emma Williams; and three brothers, Norman, Arthur and Maurice Berty. Allen is survived by his wife, Betty, who resides at Grace Health Center, Wesbury Retirement Community, Meadville Pa. and his children, Shirley and Terry Snyder of Erie, Dorothy and Rich Youngdahl of Brookville, Rodney and Paula Snyder of Erie, Kathy and Bob Hall of Ontario, N.Y., Richard and Julie Snyder of Erie, thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Edith Thomas and her husband Rev. Edward of Mass., Eleanor White of Ga. and Evelyn Kunze and her husband Raymond of Texas. Friends may call on Monday October 12 from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Falls Creek United Methodist Church, Falls Creek, Pa. Rev. Terrence Snyder and Rev. Richard Youngdahl will officiate. Burial will be in the Morningside Cemetery, Dubois with full military honors.
