Francis J. Powalisz, age 88, of 1225 S. 18th St., Manitowoc, entered eternal rest late Sunday afternoon, March 5, 2006, at St. Mary's Home Felician Village, where he had resided for the past several days.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Wojciechowski. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Francis was born June 16, 1917 in Manitowoc. He was the son of the late Frank and Anna Zagrodnik Powalisz. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1935. He continued his education with a year of drafting school correspondence. Francis was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the United States and overseas in Japan. He was a lifetime carpenter and cabinet maker operating his own business under the name of F.J. Powalisz. On Jan. 22, 1937, he married Josephine Brixius at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Since his retirement in 1980, he was an active member of the Manitowoc Senior Center. He was a member of the following committees and commissions at the Senior Center: City of Manitowoc Commission on Aging; Board of Advisors Committee; Long Range Planning Commission; held the position of chairman of the Kitchen Planning and Equipment Committee; and also served as secretary of the Executive Committee. Francis was also the woodworking instructor at the Senior Center. He was also a member of the Manitowoc County Commission on Aging. Francis also volunteered at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center and was a part-time driver for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. Francis is a member of St. Francis of Assisi attending the Marshall site and was formerly of member of the American Legion Drews Bleser Post 88.

Francis is survived by his wife of 69 years: Josephine; one son and daughter-in-law: Gerald and Donna Powalisz, Manitowoc; one daughter: Shirley Daley, Green Bay; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends surviving. He was preceded in death by his brother: Victor Powalisz.

Friends may call at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m.

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 N. Water St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
