OBITUARY DATED JANUARY 31, 1935 - "THOMPSONVILLE PRESS"
JOHN J. TIERNEY WAR VETERAN WAS BURIED TUESDAY ~
VETERAN, FRATERNAL AND ATHLETIC ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENTED AT FINAL RITES AT ST. PATRICKS CHURCH ~

The Funeral of John J. Tierney one of the towns best known young men and a popular and an exceedingly active member of the veterans group, who died Saturday evening at the U.S. Veterans Hospital, Rutland Heights, Mass., was held Tuesday morning at 8:30 from his late home on Russell St. with services at St. Patricks Church at 9 o'clock. The solemn high requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. John F. Malley assisted by Rev. Robert L. Christopher as Deacon, and Franklin J. Corrigan, subdeacon. The choir was under the direction of Miss Dorilda Castonguay, organist, and the soloist was Mrs. Daniel A. Garvey.
The services were attended by a large number of family and friends of the young man. members of Patrick F. Triggs Post V.F.W., acted as a military escort and there was a large representation from Washington Irving Council, K of C and the Greys Athletic Association in which the deceased held membership. Burial was in St. Patrick's King St. Cemetery, where Father Malley and Father Corrigan conducted the commital service. The bearers were Francis A. Burke, Martin J. Watton, Thomas W. Whiteley, Russell F. Maylott, William R. Siamon and Joseph W. Larabee.
Mr. Tierney's death is a result of impaired health following his return from France at the close of the World War. Some time ago he went to the Veteran's Hospital in Rutland Heights in hope of being benefited by the treatment there, but his condition while showing temporary improvement grew gradually worse until his death.
When a small boy he moved here from Windsor Locks where he was born, and has since made his home here. He enlisted in the 326th Infantry of the 82d Division at the outbreak of the World War and served 18 months in France. He saw much active service and was seriously gassed which is the original cause of impairing his health. On his return from the World War he resumed his position as a jacquard weaver in the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet plant where he was employed previous to entering in the service.
Mr. Tierney was well liked among his associates and friends and took a keen interest in sports of all kinds and also in the activities of the fraternal groups with which he was affiliated. He was a member of Washington Irving Council, Knights of Columbus, and the Greys Athletic Association. Some years ago he was a member of Father Mathew Fife and Drum Corps. in which he achieved distinction by holding the state championship for a number of years.
He is survived by his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Naomi Cullen and two small children Lois and John J. Jr., His Mother Mrs Thomas J. Tierney of Enfield, three brothers Martin J. Tierney, past Commander of the P.F. Triggs Post, V.F.W. and at present Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, J. Francis Tierney of Warehouse Point and Thomas J. ***************

Tread lightly, 'tis a soldiers grave,
A lonely, mossy mound;
And yet to hearts like mine and thine
It should be holy ground~

Speak softly, let no careless laugh,
No idle, thoughtless jest,
Escape your lips where sweetly sleeps
The hero in his rest~

For him no reveille will beat
When morning beams shall come;
For him, at night, no tattoo rolls
Its thunders from the drum~

Tread lightly! for a man bequeathed,
Ere laid beneath this sod,
His ashes to his native land,
His gallant soul to God~

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
